Carrie Gaul reads looks at the story of Jonah from The Jesus Storybook Bible. Like Jonah, have you ever told God "no"? What does His response to our no's reveal about Him?"

This is kinda funny, we have been talkin about Jonah in Sunday School the past few weeks at church. He ran from God and thought he could hide, but he couldn't. A lot of times, if people don't wanna do what God wants them to do, they run. They hide, and try to stay away from God. Can we really hide from God? No! He always knows where we are, what we are doing, and things like that (just like He knew where Adam and Eve were in the Garden). Don't run from God, do what He wants. If you do what He wants, you won't get consequences and things will turn out for the better. Run from Him, and you will get major consequences. Look at the 10 plagues for example that happened to Pharoh because he wouldn't let the people go. That is a lot of bad consequences, and things like that could happen to us. We could have problems sleeping, problems eating, and things like that. Follow God, He does know what is best!

    Speaking for Him
on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 9:21 am
Okay, I have to say that I really agree with this video!

There have been times, yes, when I felt so small, so insignificant that I ignored that voice telling me to say something or go encourage that brother or sister in Christ because they needed it.

For example, one time when I was in seventh grade, we did this thing where we each chose an object, and we had to go off and find out from God how we can look at that in a Biblical way. Well, I chose something, and I had this great idea of what my object (an umbrella) was, and God told me to give a message to someone. Well.......I was really nervous, so I didn't. I thought that maybe God didn't want me to actually tell him; maybe it was just me making something up in my head! I didn't want to give this guy that I didn't know well, who was 2 years older than me, a message! So I didn't. That evening was a great time of encouragement. I had people telling me encouraging things and sharing like crazy. As we went around the room talking about our objects for about a half hour, I noticed that the ONLY PERSON who did not get a message specifically for them was the boy that God told me to give the message to. I was so upset, because by then I knew that I really should have spoken when God asked me to. I still think about it today and feel bad.

Something that has been on my heart since the beginning of the year pretty much has been speaking up for God when He asks me to. I had some issues with this before, like when He wanted me to share something with the church but I didn't because I was too afraid. So at the beginning of the year I promised God that if He would continue to give me messages (I hadn't felt like I had one in a while), then I would speak for Him. It was a hard thing to promise and it's been even harder to live out, but by His strength I have been able to share my heart in front of the adults at my church even (which is hard for me since I like being on stage for everything BUT public speaking). He gives me strength when I am weak, and where I fall short, He is long enough. He is truly good to me.

When we run away from God's plan, I think we fall into guilt, like Jonah did. I think we are supposed to be God's lights in this world of darkness...but I also think that we are supposed to speak words of encouragement to our brothers and sisters in Christ as well. So that's where I am at in life and what God is teaching me specifically. I don't know what will be next, but I trust God that it will be just as great!

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11

    changing my outlook

Sometimes I get frustrated because it seems like the people who are looked down on at school, or even church stick to me. They have horrible home lives and cannot see their worth in life. They can be moody, sensitive, depressed, and make bad life changing choices. I get upset because I have been put in these sad, frustrating situations, but why? I shouldn't be upset because God sends people who are hurting to me on a daily basis that I can be a witness and encouragement to. So why get angry when God is trying to use me?

Wow...I was just thinking this...that if I was someone from the Bible, I'd be Jonah...because I so often run from God, or tell Him He's wrong, that He should get somebody else, etc.

Thanks for this reminder, that going with Him is really best...

@Rachel M.: Thank you so much for sharing Jeremiah 29:11...that's like one of my favorite verses, something that I need reminded of often

God doesn't give up on us!

Isn't our God amazing? He never gives up on us know matter how much we sin! Even though Jonah blatantly ignored God's commands, God sent a fish to save him from drowning and then used the Holy Spirit to convict him. I'm so glad God doesn't ever give up on me even when I'm such a sinner! Thanks LYWB team for the encouraging posts that remind me to put my all in all in Jesus!!

I often run from away from God because of things that I have done. I completely agree with Carina!

Wow.. guess what?! Jeremiah 29:11 is the verse that God has been sending to me right and left! Even with this series of books by Karen Kingsbury( The Bailey Flanagan Series) that I'm reading right now.. that verse is the theme of the books!!!! God knows what our life is going to be like and we have to listen to His plans for us!!!! ;)

I encourage you, Hannah, to run towards God instead of running away from Him. He loves you so much. He truly knows what is best. He knows your present, your past and your future and you can trust the plan He has for your life. Praying for you, Hannah!

Thanks for your honesty, Hannah. You don’t have to keep running; because of Jesus we can have a right relationship with God regardless of our past when we repent of our sin and accept Jesus work on the cross for us.

When we repent we can rest in the truth that God will never again hold our sin against us.

    • As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us ( Ps. 103:12).
    • "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool ( Is. 1:18).

Praying for you today, my friend, to walk in the freedom of His boundless love and forgiveness.
