Meet Joe

Are you stressed out trying to control your job, your grades, your friendships, your family, your future, your current needs, your past regrets?

I have good news for you today. You can take a deep breath. Relax. Let go. Your sovereign, loving God is in control of the smallest details of your life.

Meet Joseph. You can call him Joe. Even though he lived years before you, you can still relate to his life. He was around your age—just 17—when his brothers threw him in a pit and sold him as a slave (and you thought your brothers were mean!).

Sounds pretty lonely and hopeless, but God was at work:

“The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had.” (Gen. 39;2-4)

As much as Joe’s brothers wanted to ruin his life, they couldn’t, ’cause the Lord caused everything Joe did to succeed! Things started looking up for Joe—and it didn’t escape the attention of his master’s wife.

She thought Joe was pretty hot stuff, and pursued him daily. Still, he never budged. This is where it all seemed to go downhill. She accused Joe of rape, and he was thrown in prison . . . for years—for a crime he didn’t commit. If things seemed hopeless before in that pit—things really looked hopeless now in this prison.

Yet, in the course of one day, Joseph went from prison to second in command over all of Egypt. What are the chances of that?! Impossible . . . for everyone except God!

It wasn’t until years later that Joe could see what God had been doing all along—He took Joe miles from home and placed him in the most powerful position in Egypt at a time when famine threatened to wipe out God’s people. God used Joe to feed & save Israel.

Do you know that God is sovereign over your life, just like he was over Joe’s?! Augustine defines God’s sovereignty this way:

“Everything that happens does so because God wills it to happen, wills it to happen before it happens, wills it to happen in the way that it happens.”

God loves you and has an incredible purpose for you to fulfill. He is at work—right now—in your suffering and your successes. You can’t see what God’s doing in the details, but trust me—He’s at work, and He’s good at the details.

Will you join me today in embracing His sovereignty?

“God, I don’t get it. I didn’t plan for my life to turn out this way. But I know you’re wiser than me. I know you don’t make mistakes. I choose to trust you.”

I can’t wait to see the story He writes for your life! (Check out Joe’s entire story in Genesis 37-47—you won’t want to miss any of the thrilling details.)

That’s awesome that your friend knows you’re there for her! I wanted to share with you two things I’ve been learning lately:

    1. Our friends don’t need us—they need Jesus. Keep looking for ways to point them to Him!
    2. A really good way (really the only way) to do this is by spending time with Jesus ourselves. Ask Jesus to speak to you each day through His Word, and then look for someone to share it with each day. He just did it for me! My friend’s starting a CEF Club today, and I prayed this verse over her that He gave me this morning. When I said “Amen,” she said with wonder, “That’s the verse God gave me Sunday!” Cool God, huh?!

I love that story. It just is a good story to hear. I know that what happens is for a reason. It helps to hear that someone is there and there is a reason for everything.

I love your question, Jenny. I'll try to give you a couple ideas, but first, would you mind telling me a little more about it? What is making it stressful right now? What do you think is the purpose of a "quiet time"? Thanks!

    I'm a great stresser, too!

Mei, I'm so glad you're learning to let go and trust God with everything!

I am praying that God will help each of us live out Philippians 4:6-7 more and more each day--in the midst of annoying people, difficult circumstances, and unfulfilled longings:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Try it--next time you're worrying/frustrated--bring it to God in prayer. Then, let me know how it goes!

I'm so sorry that you lost one of your best friends.

Jesus understands--He was separated from His dearest friend, His Father, thru His own death.

Amazingly, He died so that He might free us from the curse of death! (Check out Hebrews 2:14-15 and 1 Cor. 15:26).

Soon, He will wipe away every tear from our eyes, and DEATH SHALL BE NO MORE, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore (Rev. 21:4)!

    Quiet Time
on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 11:12 am
It just doesn't seem like I have enough time to really feel filled. Not time to really learn about God.

I get so busy. I'm so worried or stressed that I don't take the time to just stop. I want to learn! I want to know more about God and I want Him to lead me.

I tried reading my bible in the morning before school, but then I got tired of getting up early. So then I did it at night, before I went to bed. But I have school books I have to read and other fun books that I can't stop reading. (Smile)
It seems like I take more time doing the things I want, then spending time with Him.
What does your quiet time look like?
Do you read your bible and pray every day?
I am sort of stressed and confused. Help!

Hello! I don't know if I can be much of a help, but I have gone through the same things. I always was putting things ahead of the time I should spend with God. Well, I sugest that you spend time with God whenever you can. It might mean not going to a place with a friend. I almost always do my devotions at night. But then there are the days when I am really tired, or have something else I have to do before bed. Then, I will sit in a room in lunch period at school, and eat and study at the same time. I did the same thing at my volleyball games. On the way to the game and during the game right after ours, I did my devotions in the car and lockerroom! Soon, I am turning 13, and when I do I am going to vow to spend quality time with God everyday of my 13th year. I try so hard to read my Bible and pray everyday, and sometimes I really don't want to, but feel that I have to. But after awhile, I start to have the desire to spend time with God, and think about Him constantly. I hope this helped! =D

Hey girl! I get stressed too, just with so much going on in my life. The best ways for me to stop stress is:
    1. Spend quality time with God every day, praying and reading the Bible.
    2. Handle one issue at a time, then when you complete it, start the next one. Maybe make a checklist to see your progress!
    3. Take a break every so often and do something you really enjoy like hanging out with friends, or reading a good book or something!

Hope this helps you! I love reading your comments and posts, and it's amazing how I go trhough so much of the same things as you girls do!

    Quiet Time
on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 5:03 pm
    Dear Jenny,

You’re not alone! I find that busyness is my greatest enemy that keeps me from prioritizing time with God. The ironic thing is that my days are filled with good things—but when the “good” pushes out the “best,” it’s really “bad.”

I so regret the days and months and years I’ve wasted—I wish I knew Him better know. I wish I knew His Word better.

You asked about my “quiet times” . . . they really do look different every day. I try to spend time with Him each morning before I start into my day. I’m usually yawning like crazy (I don’t drink coffee), and begging Him to keep me awake.

If I fail to get up on time (which often happens), I’ll try to spend time with Him as soon as possible. Sometimes that means spending my lunch break with Him, or just getting away with Him at the end of my work day. Of course I can talk to Him throughout the day, but I desperately need these longer periods of time with Him.

What do I do? I love variety, so I switch back and forth between a couple Bible studies I’m currently in, as well as a daily Bible reading plan. I’m way behind on it, but at least I’m reading from all parts of the Bible.

Journaling is huge for me—if I don’t write down what I learn about God from the text, it goes in my head and out the other side within minutes. Some days I sing to Him. Other times I just pray the Scriptures back to Him. Occasionally, I’ll just be still before Him. You can really be creative—draw a picture of what you learned from His Word, memorize small sections of Scripture, write your friend a note encouraging her with what you learned that morning, etc.

Remember that you’re meeting with a living Person! Ask Him to help you get to know Him, and pour out your heart before Him. He loves you and delights in spending time with you!

    Dear Rgjo 777,

Maybe some of the loads you're carrying aren't yours to carry . . . Check out this super short article by Nancy--it will rock your world, as you learn that you have enough time in each day for God's priorities. Let me know what you think of it!

    Stress
on Monday, June 8, 2009 at 4:18 pm
This past school year there has been way to much stress with school, family, and friends. At our school middle school starts at seventh grade and its full of clicks. Theres a science test every week, I never thought I could get through this year! To top it off my dad started working late, and my brothers began to just torture me. They would hit me, steal my stuff, and call me ugly right to my face! And they call themselves christians! So I just want to say thanks, now I know about someone with bigger brother problems than me! Even so I always take the time to thank God for all that he's done to get me through all this. Thanks!

I think Joseph had one of the most stressful childhoods. My childhood was fantastic tilll my teen years. I'm a homeschooled student and it just seems that life is soo hard right now. I'm 16, but feel much older. Having re-read the story of Joseph, I noticed that no matter how stressful things are with my family, that he had it way worse than me and God still was faithful to him.

    To Abby re. "Stress"
on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 4:57 pm
Yikes, Abby. I’m stressed out just hearing about your schedule! Sounds like you have more on your plate than any girl should have to try to juggle. Is there anything you can let go of?

I have the same problem—have for years. I don’t like to say no, and I want to be involved in everything! The reason I call it a problem is because it’s so easy to let God take last place when our schedules fill up with so many urgent (notice I didn’t say “important”) things.

I encourage you to read the story of Jesus’ interaction with two sisters in Luke 10:38-42. One of the sisters is sitting at his feet hanging on to every word. The other sister is freaking out, stressed, and angry that her sister’s not helping her. Jesus’ response is surprising, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Oh, I hope and pray that you and I choose the best thing—time with Jesus—over other “good” activities.

    Love you!

    Stress(Ouch!)
on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at 7:26 pm
I don't know how much longer I'll be able to deal with the stress of everyday life, no matter how big or how little it is. I am taking three Honors classes and one AP class and I was given solos for All State and Select Band that might be too much for me to tackle(These solo pieces were practically thrown at me. I wasn't even asked if I wanted to do these bands or not). I could type a loooong list of things that are causing me stress, but just these things alone are practically killing me. I feel as if at any moment I could snap. I try my best to make time for God(I'm searching for signs), but I don't want to snap before I realize that things are going to get better. I want to be able to balance my life properly without feeling lie this.

Have you shared with your parents the stress and pressure you are feeling from school and the expectations that are being placed on you there, Bazinga? Perhaps they can help you sort through the load you are carrying to decide what you should continue doing and what you can let go. God gave us parents to help us, to encourage and support us and to pray for us. Will you share with them today? I’m praying for you, dear friend!
