3 Things God Can't Do

All month I have been writing about the characteristics of God. He is omnipresent (always with us). He is omniscient (all knowing). He is omnipotent  (His authority is unlimited). He is good and compassionate and loving and full of grace. The list of words that we could use to describe Him seems endless.

But did you know that there are three things God can’t do?

I’m not talking about building a rock so big that even he can’t lift it, or anything else so trivial. I am talking about three biggies. Three important things that God simply cannot do.

1. God can’t lie.

Titus 1:2 says, “ a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time.”

“God, who does not lie.”

That means everything He tells us about himself through is Word is true. And everything He says about the way He feels about us is true. He does not lie.

2. God can’t change.

In Hebrews 13:8 we read, “ Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

He does not change. What is true about Him has always been true about Him and will always be true about Him. His character doesn’t change. He doesn’t experience mood swings. His feelings for you don’t waver.

3. God can’t let you in to heaven without Jesus.

John 14:5-6 says, “ Thomas said to him, ‘ Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’

Jesus answered, ‘ I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

Jesus is the way.

You can’t be good enough to earn salvation. You won’t be saved by adhering to a list of do’s and don’ts and there aren’t multiple paths leading to the same end.  You can’t combine this Truth with portions of other messages offered by the world. The only way to heaven is Jesus Christ who died on the cross for my sins and for yours.

There is a lot about God that it is important that you know and understand. But the most important thing you can know is that Jesus loved you so much that He died for you, paving the way for you to be freed from your sin.

Have you accepted this critical Truth? What has been the impact on your life?

Note: This message was originally given by my friend, Pastor Jonathan Weibel.

It's so cool to think that God can't do those any of those things- lie, change, or let you into heaven without Jesus. But in a way, if we really thougt about it, God chooses to be truthful and constant. So many people let us down, yet God, by choice, will never fail. It's awesome. In my crazy world is my Rock of Peace.

I think it's intresting that you mentioned that the only way to heaven is Jesus. Yesterday at our church our pastor spoke about being vs. doing. We can never DO enough to enter the kingdom of heaven we can only BE enough. We can only be filled with the holy spirit.

I am so sorry that you feel this way. To put it bluntly, you have been deceived. One of God's names is Truth (Revelation 19:11). Scripture tells us he does not lie.

But there is one who lies. Satan is the Father of lies (John 8:44.

Is it possible that you have been lied to by Satan or by the World instead of being lied to by God?

Aunyee, I am so sorry you feel that way! It's not true though! God would never lie to you, he loves you and he would only want what is best for you! Erin is right, it's more than likely that you have been deceived by Satan or the World. I don't know what your situation is, but I pray that whatever you went through/going through, that hopefully things would work out alright and that you'd see that God doesn't lie.

Anyway, I really REALLY liked number 2. It's nice to think that the Lord will ALWAYS be our Lord. That he will love us, take care of us, and never leave us. And that is such a firm truth that anyone can rely on. Relying on people isn't the best idea, and you can easily be disappointed or hurt. So, it's very comforting to know God will never change. Praises be to him! :)

Amazing! This was a huge reminder and a great one, too. I have been having some issues where it is hard for me to believe. Sometimes I just want to crawl into a hole and be lost forever.

But knowing that God is there and that He never changes was a great reminder! I have felt let down by God before and it is hard for me to believe that He knows exactly what He is doing.

But He does! I have had a great expriance that I wish would happen all the time!

He will show you sometime, that He is there, and that He doesn't lie. Someday your eyes will see His might and HIs truth. It will be amazing! I'll be praying for you!

I have been in your same boat. I sometimes thought God lied. But an attribute of God is that He does things in His own way and in His own time. And part of faith is trusting that God will work all things out for your ultimate good(Romans 8:28-29). I'll be the first person to admit that trusting God is tough. God has put many hard things in my life. But each day, I see Him working them all out slowly for my good. Trust Him. He loves you and He is worthy of all your trust. Hang on to God when He doesn't make sense; He knows what He's doing. He has proven Himself faithful, but you have to allow Him to show His faithfulness. You are precious to Him and He loves you to pieces! But you have to do your part to trust Him. We walk by faith, not by sight. The essence of true faith is following when you don't know how it will all turn. I truly hope you will come to know Him like I have. Cause once you get to really know Him, you discover how awesome He really is. He loves you! And so do I. I will pray for you!

    randomosity,
Why do you question God's love? In
1 John 4:8, it says that God is love. I believe what God says. btw, God has shown Satan a tremendous amount of mercy. He shows us as sinners a great deal of mercy. God hates the sin but loves the sinner. God loved us so much that He gave us His only begotten Son.(John 3:16). I also believe that there are certain things about God we won't understand this side of heaven. But I have to say that God's attributes do not conflict. Have you considered that we do not know all of God's attruibutes? If we understood everything about God, then He wouldn't be God, would He? And how can the finite understand the infinite? In my life I have learned that God doesn't fit in our box; He's too big! We need to trust Him and who He says He is. That's faith.
Back to my question: Why are you questioning God's love? Think about it!

A university professor challenged his students with this question.
"Did God create everything that exists?

A student bravely replied, "yes! He did!"

"God created everything?” the professor asked.

    "Yes sir", the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then God is evil".

The student became quiet before such an answer.

The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "Can I ask you a question, professor?"

    "Of course", replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"

The students snickered at the young man's question.

The young man replied, "In fact, sir, cold does not exist.
According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody or object is susceptible to study, when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (- 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat.”

The student continued. "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does".

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either.

Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor. "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself.

Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love that exist just as does light and heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

    The professor sat down.

    May I say a word
on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at 8:47 am
God does say that He hates in scripture. Here's just one of many passages in the Bible. this one is from Revelation. There's more.

    Revelation 2:6
But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.

God is love. He has the atribute of being loving. The Bible says "God is holy, holy, holy." (another attribute of God) Since God is holy, he will allow no sin in His presence. Thus He hates the sin and the sinner. The sinner has sinned and is in rebellion against God. His holiness demands that both be punished.

Now, God in His love and grace provided a sacrifice for sin. His holiness demanded that it be a blood sacrifice. The blood of the little lambs who were killed year after year could never take away sin. But God sent The Lamb to die on Calvary's cross to be our substite in our place. Now God can forgive sin if asked.

Now, here's a question frequently heard. If God was loving why would he damn people to Hell? Answer: Those who are in Hell have made the choice to reject God. I hope you see where I going. When God sends them to Hell he can still love them doing so, but His holiness demands that He punish their iniquity. I'll research this a bit more and give y'all some Bible verses.

    Hi there!

I am sorry you are wresting with these emotions. It sounds like you are going through a tough time.

Would you mind reading this post http://www.liesyoungwomenbelieve.com/index.php?id=192? It is titled "what to do when God feels far away." I think it may help you get to the bottom of some of your feelings.

Can I just be bold with you and tell you that you've been lied to. God absolutely does answer prayer. James 5:16 tells us "the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."

And he does care about you. 1 Peter 5:7 says, "cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." Luke 12:7 says, "Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."

And He certainly loves you. 1 John 3:1
says, "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"

And this holy week we are celebrating that He died on the cross to save you from your sin and reconcile you to himself. There has never been a greater act of love.

I strongly encourage you to pursue God's Truth at this time when you are feeling so discouraged. Be diligent about rooting out lies and replacing them with Truth from His Word.

    blonde chick,
i was just wondering if maybe you haven't given him a chance. i know what it feels like to pray and have everything turn upside down. for me, it was like God wasn't lifting me out of a pit of sin and depression- that I was totally and completely lost. I kept praying, whenever I felt like it.
eventually, i realized that i kinda figured God was my remote. push a button (pray) and you can change the channel. i wasn't really listening to what he had to say. and maybe i wasn't entirely sure i wanted to be saved. now, instead of being in despair, i have this amazing hope in me (i'm not totally out of my pit). but i keep climbing and falling and feeling God holding me up. Because now, after realizing my mistake, i am much stronger. so maybe God's telling you to wait a little and grow stronger; maybe he's trying to build you up. give him another chance just like he keeps giving you chances

If you believe that God lies then you must beleive that
1)The bible is NOT TRUE because it says in Titus 1:2(KJV) In hope of eternal life, which God, THAT CANNOT LIE, promised before the world began.

It also says in Hebrews 6:18a(KJV) That by two immutable things, in which it was IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE.

    note:IMMUTABLE MEANS,unchanging.

You must also beleive that Jesus can't get you to heaven because a innocent person had to die to save you from your sin and if He leid then he was no longer innocent!

I don't mean to be mean I'm just trying to help! I'll be praying for you!

    "problems"
on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 8:00 pm
I think it's fair to say we've all got "problems" since we're all tainted by sin :-\

But I also think we should take joy in our trials, right? kinda like Scripture says. No matter how hard they are.

Trust in the Lord. Take joy in Him and His faithfulness.

Sometimes I'm so glad that He's perfect- the ONLY one that's sinless. I mean, if EVERYTHING that is was sinful, who would be my anchor? nothin!

So let's git over our "problems" and take joy in our LIVING SAVIOR! :-)

oh and btw, when we don't let go of our "problems" and keep grieving over them, we're not trusting in God OR we're wallowing in self-pity. or maybe both. that's not a good thing!!

    blonde.chick,

Please know that I am in no way trying to accuse you of anything. I only speak from personal experience and am warning you and others against the pits I have fallen into myself (such as wallowing in self-pity.)

Also, are you really living to "convice everyone i know that nothing is wrong and that me and God are tight"?Maybe that's what is causing you so many problems! I know that the very same goal has done the same to me!!

Get the people and appearances out of your life goal. Be real with God and then people will see what is real. Some may not see your tightness w/ God but, hey, that's their problem! Who cares what they think?

As long as it's you and God and you're in sync w/ Him, it doesn't matter if people see! :-D

Plus, people will see by the fruit you bear. If you're in sync w/ God you'll bear good fruit.

And there's no magic or ladder-process to get back w/ God. Just be REAL and honest w/ Him!

Open up! Be broken before Him ...

...and let Him put you back together.

idk how. i really just dont anymore. idk how to be honest with God. idk how to be open with anyone because i feel like there is so much to hide. i have to convince everyone else that i am right with God. especially my parents. all the trouble i am in and all the "problems"-as you say- that are in my life right now are from bad decisions on my part. its all my fault and i know it and i am dealing with the consequenses and as i am doing that all i am doing is getting deeper and deeper in the lie that everything is okay, that i am not hurting, that i am right with god, that i am a good christian girl, that i dont need anyone. i realize all those are lies. i am not wallowing in self pity bcuz i know i deserve every single ounce of pain and hurt that i am going through right now becuase of my lies and other decisions. what i am mainly trying to say is that i have almost no relationship with God and i dont know how to get back to the point where i am "bearing fruit". because i havnt always been like this. i will be 16 in less than a week and i got 'saved' when i was 4. but idont think it was real or else i would have been able to let god help me through the sin i am in right now. it has been goin on for about 6 years now. and the first two years i thought i was on top of it and that God was there adn that he would help me through.

God cannot remember since that we have already been forgiven for. The Bible says He throws them as far as the East is from the West. So those "sins" we keep asking forgiveness for over and over again, Satan just uses those to try to make us feel unworthy. But through Christ we are already forgiven.

God hates sin. Sin came into the world when Adam and Eve sinned and ate the apple off of the tree of knowledge and Good and evil. God knew all this was going to happen but that doesn't mean He likes what He saw what was happening.

    God doesnt lie to you.
When I was reading some one said that
"God has lied to me.I cant say how but he did"
    are you crazy,
    he gives you two roads.
one thats bad and one thats good.
your the one who is deciding witch one to take. Its your life..
he cant tell you witch one is good and witch is bad..he lets you decided.
cause he cant change the world.I mean he could.but he wonts us to decide what to so not any one eles.
    he doesnt lie you do..
your lieing right know if you really think that God has lied to you

I have to say I agree with God not lying to you. I know God can't lie and I know Satan tries to tie us down with all of his lies or tries to deceive us into believing that God is the one lying to us.. when that isn't true. I know this has kinda already been hit on... but I just wanted to add my two cents.

You said you prayed God would send someone cares? Well... Maybe he already did. You're just looking right over them - Priya, Erin, and many others here. We may not know you that well, but we still care about you and pray for you.
Blonde Chick, do you think you can do something for me? Get out your Bible and for the next 4 weeks read through the Psalms. Maybe that will help you... The Psalms are actually prayers, you know!

Psalm 73:1 -- Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
Psalm 139:1-4 -- O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.

one time my sunday school teacher asked what we think God can't do and the only one i could come up with was SIN... idk if thats right but obviously lying is a sin, but he cant commit any other sins can he? i mean instead of just lie, why isnt it just SIN???? just curious

I feel the same way. i feel like God just isn't there. My soccer coach and my teacher keep me raised up. They pray with me and talk to me and it really helps. Try reading Psalm 34. It really helped me when I thought God just wasn't there for me or to help me.

Yeah God can't sin but thats just one. He could let us into Heaven but because of sin we need Jesus and lieing is also sin so GOD CAN DO ALL THINGS.
But He did not make sin because God
    only makes good things.

    God of Lies
on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 6:25 pm
I find it pretty funnyt that people willingly over look the god of the bibles lies. I will only give you a few in Genesis.

    1. Genesis 2:15: “”You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

That is as vivid as a promise gets. If you eat of the tree, I promise that you will die. Adam actually DID eat of the fruit later in Genesis, but not only lived; he managed to live another 930 years as well! Right from the start we’ve got a God who did not make good on an explicit promise.

    2. Genesis 46:4: “I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.”¯

This was the God of the Bible speaking to Jacob, promising that he would bring him back from Egypt safely. But, in a few short verses later, we find that either the God of the Bible forgot his promise, (or in infinite wisdom that’s far beyond our understanding), or he changed his mind. Genesis 47:28 states; “Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.”¯ Jacob died in Egypt, probably wondering why this explicit promise by the God of the Bible wasn’t kept.

    3. Genesis 15:18: “In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates.”

Wow; that’s quite an incredible promise! The land promised to the “chosen people”¯ reached far beyond the modern-day borders of Israel, also encompassing the modern-day nations of Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq! Defenders often argue that the promise was taken back when the God of the Bible’s chosen people worshiped other gods than him (although these words appear nowhere in the Bible I can find). It only takes looking to Deuteronomy 9:5 to rebuke the rebuttal by the defenders where it’s clearly stated and reiterated: “It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”¯

Now...before anyone says, "this didn't take place because of this reason", find in the scriptures that refutes the scriptures that Ih ave given you.
