What's your favorite verse?

The most powerful weapon against Satan's lies is God's truth. The best way to counteract the destructive power of lies in our lives is to intentionally focus on Scripture. Bible

Nancy and Dannah share some great ideas for places to post Scripture when you are trying to overcome lies in Lies Young Women Believe, including:

  • your rear-view mirror
  • the back cover of your Bible
  • your lunch box
  • your best friend's bedroom
  • your mom's purse
  • your locker
  • your MySpace or Facebook page
  • your computer
  • your bathroom mirror
  • beside your bed (Lies Young Women Believe, 181).

The point is that when you are battling lies, you need to get practical. Look for specific verses in God's Word that counter those lies. Then saturate your life with God's truth. Meditate on those verses often. Post them where you can see them regularly. Revisit those passages anytime you are struggling or in need of encouragement.

I know this group of readers well enough to guess that many of you are already using God's Word in this way. I'd love to hear about it. What is your favorite verse in Scripture? How do you use that verse to meditate on truth?

To help you get a jump-start on replacing lies with truth in 2010, I'm going to give away Nancy's brand-new Choosing Gratitude calendar to the first 10 readers to leave us a comment answering the two questions above. Be sure to include your email address so that we can contact you for shipping information.

One of my favorite verses is Matt 11:28-30 Jesus tells those who are weary and in need of rest to come and give their burdens to Him for His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He cares so much about us. It's a really comforting verse. :D

I have lots of favorites, but one of my absolute favorites is Ps. 119: 66-68 and 71. It reminds me that through hard times, God is still incredibly good and He uses that hard situation to draw me closer to Him and learn to obey Him better.

    My favorits scripture is
However, as it is written: No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9.
the best way I find to meditate is take post it notes and post them everywhere.... i stick them in my car, my mirror, in my wallet, at my desk at work, i also put them in my bible! It helps me to keep God's word with me all day..... especially if its a scripture thats helping me get through a trial its so nice to have the victory all day with me!

I'm not sure why exactly, but I love the verse in John 15 (v. 18 i believe) where Jesus says "when the world hates you remember that it hated me first". I guess that verse just speaks to me about how it's good when we don't live like the world does! We have God as our example of how we should live. To me it says, "Don't worry, Jesus had these same struggles with the world, and the world hated Him too." Praise God!!!

Can I write down the whole bible ;)
1 Corinthians 13: Love never fails!

In all things let that be my focus. Loves overcomes all things, no matter what my situation is. Telling myself this in all kind of (difficult) situations, knowing God's love is TRUTH, takes away the focus from problems, back to God! That's the truth I wanna live in!

I have a lot of favorite verses but my favorite verse would have to be 1 Timothy 4:12. "Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe."

No matter who I am with, young or old, I quote this verse. It sums up what I want my life to be. I want to be a godly example for those around me.

I think my favourite verse is the same as Heather. When I was having a hard time not getting too much under the influence of a guy I play soccer with (he is def not the right guy cause he's married), I would read the Bible before I went and that would remind me what life is all about and strengthen me. Now I can see wholeheartedly that I don't think about him in any other way than a friend and am not ashamed to own up to what I believe. Everytime I feel sad or lonely it cheers me up to think I have the best Friend ever.

It's so hard to choose a favorite verse -- but some that have been very encouraging to me lately are Ps. 73:25-26. "Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside Thee. My flesh and my heart faileth, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

I've been struggling with feeling lonely, but these verses are so comforting! A while back, I put them next to my laptop and at the piano where I'd see them every day. Now I rotate different verses to those places each week.

My favorite verse (so hard! only ONE?!?) is Isaiah 30:18 "Therefore the LORD will wait, that He may be gracious to you; And therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you. For the LORD is a God of justice; Blessed are all those who wait for Him" I like the ESV version better, that was NKJV. I have used that verse by writing it out in my journal several times, and just by reading it over and over. That whole passage is very meaningful to me, because it speaks about things I really struggle with and fear.

My favorite verse is probably Revelation 4:21, " He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." That verse gives me great hope that the pain of this life will not last forever, and soon we will be with our heavenly father. Hope it gives you hope too!

My Favorite verse is 1 Cor. 10:13 " No Temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." THis is my favorite verse because it reminds me that I am not the only one who struggles with the things that I struggle with. That there are other people around me who are struggling with the same thing. And that God will give me the strength to not fall in to the temptation.

Yesterday I was struggling alot with frustrations and I was allowing Satan to get me down. Then read 1 Peter 5:10 and I was deeply encourged to keep fighting the good fight, to keep pressing on and not to give up. The verse says, "After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in christ, will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you." There is a reason for everything we face in life and God will gie us the strength to get through it. We only need to trust the Lord!

the most uplifting verse to me
on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Almost a year ago life got really hard for me. My family was most likely going to move AGAIN! My dad had no job and wasn't finding one anytime soon it looked like. So I turned to the Bible and decided to find the most uplifting verse I could. Here it is :
Revelation 21:4 " He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." (ESV)

This was very helpful to remember daily that God is going to make EVERYTHING better and some day I won't have to think about what will happen to me or worry in anyway. I put this verse on my bedroom wall and it's still there. My dad doesn't have a full time job but things are starting to look up. And I have a feeling it's getting better for me in my heart because I keep turning to God and this verse to put my trust in not anything else. Which is what I want every teen girl to know and remember God cares and wants the best for them. And one day he will make all things new.

darn! I can't reember where exactly the reference is but I believe its in Romans and it says: "Amid all these things I am more than a conqueror and gain a surpassing victory through him who loves me." I love that! It reminds me how much more God has given me! And I think we forget so often the The same guy who created the entire universe who knows your thoughts and the plan for your life dwells in us! That seems so cliche' but if only we would truly understand what that means! I have lots of quotes and verses on my bedroom door so as i'm going out I can glance at one, and before I know it I have it memorized!

Since this is a website about righting lies girls have been told, I thought I would comment that while I really appreciate your sight and the messages you are trying to promote to young girls, one particular verse you have mentioned, Titus 2:4-5, is a particularly dangerous one to simplify into a principle, and has been under constant hermineutical speculation by top theologians for centuries. Most scholars would currently agree that the appropriate translation is actually to be "busy" at home, not "work from home," since no one, men included, commonly worked outside of the house prior to the industrial revolution in the 19th century. The verse is likely intended to encourage girls to work and not be idle, (more in line with the proverbs 31 woman), rather than to "stay home with the kids," though motherhood is simply a high calling. We must remember women with important careers in the bible, such as Lydia, a cloth dyer, and Deborah, a judge AND eventual commander over the military. I do not recall offhand if these women were also mothers; that was apprently not the point of their inclusion in scripture. To look to single verse for an answer, rather than at all of scripture holistically, can be quite dangerous. It would be a true shame if wise Christian women such as Mother Teresa, Marilynne Robinson, and Flannery O'Connor had given up their career callings as humanitarians and writers. Its probable I wouldn't be a Christian without their guidance.

I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a single blog post where we imply that the Bible requires women to stay at home. In fact, we've gone out of our way to look at this passage in the holistic way you advised.

Here are several past posts that are great examples on our stance on this issue:

    http://www.liesyoungwomenbelieve.com/index.php?id=260

    http://www.liesyoungwomenbelieve.com/index.php?id=166

    http://www.liesyoungwomenbelieve.com/index.php?id=262

I am a Christian woman, mom of 1 (with one on the way) I also work both inside and outside of the home. All of the other women who write for this site are in the same position. So, again, I don't think you will find a single post where we pull the verse you mentioned out of context in the way you implied. Blogs don't allow us to cover all angles of an issue in a single post, but we work hard to present God's Word in context and not use it for our own agenda.

I'd be happy to discuss this further if any additional thoughts come to mind. Thanks for your input.

Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good, to those who love God, to those who are the called, according to His purpose." It shows that no matter what happens, good or bad, that God has a plan for those who love Him, and that He will work it out for good, even if we can't see it at the time. My favorite verse in general is Pslams 138:8 "The Lord will work out his plans for my life" That's just the first part and that's the part I tell myself almost everyday. The biggest lie I tell myself is "God must be pretty happy with me" sounds really stuck up, I know. And I do think that God delights in his children but that doesn't mean I never do anything wrong. That's the part I forget. So I just tell myself "for all fall short of the glory of God... and even I've cheated on him" Hope that makes sense because that's what my thought process is like when I'm dealing with lies.

Probably one of my favorite verses is Psalm 46:10 'Be still and know that I am God'. It reminds me that I just need to slow things down and remember what it's all about!

My most favorite bible verse is Ephesians 4:1-3 - "As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." This Verse is encouraging me to have a passon on fire for the Lord!

Daniel 3:25 He said,"Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." This scripture shows how faithful God is in the midst of any and every circumstance. It shows that if we trust him he will never leave us or forsake us. I posted this scripture as a wallpaper on my phone and in my room so everyday I am reminded to trust God.
