The Spiritual Side of Sleep

In 1 Kings 19:1–3 we find the prophet Elijah in quite a pickle. He had ticked off the queen by killing her prophets. She threatened to take his life, so he ran away from home.

In verse 4 we find him in the middle of a serious pity party. "He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, LORD,' he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.'"

It's true that Elijah faced difficult circumstances. It's no fun when others are mad at you, especially when they're as mad as Elijah's enemies were. But he totally lost perspective. He forgot that he was playing on God's team and that he didn't have to carry the burden of his circumstances alone. He got so wrapped up in what others were thinking and saying about him that death seemed like a good solution. sleep

At the peak of Elijah's misery, he did something really spiritual. He took a nap.

In verse 5 we read, "Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep."

When he woke up he found the strength to carry on. In fact, he moved from praying to die under the limbs of a broom tree to finding the strength to travel for 40 days to reach the mountain of God. On that mountain he experienced God's presence (v. 12).

Elijah's story reminds me of the spiritual impact of sleep. God designed our bodies to rest. In fact, He urges us to rest over and over in His Word. When we face difficult circumstances, when we feel like the whole world is against us, or when we've lost the desire to go on, sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is get some sleep.

Science agrees with me. A study recently published in Sleep magazine noted that teens who had a bedtime of 10 p.m. or earlier got more sleep and were less likely to be depressed or consider suicide than those allowed to stay up past midnight. Researchers noted that just two extra hours of sleep each night has a huge impact on mental health.

Are you feeling depressed? Does it feel like the whole world is against you? Do your circumstances seem unbearable? Do you long to be in God's presence, but feel like the journey is too long? Maybe it's time for some rest.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).

I love Sleep!!!! It always seems to make me feel better. I have never looked at this story of Elijah, its cool. Thanks so much for this post. The last to week I have been getting to bed a lot later, because of the Olympics. Now that they are over I can go to bed earlier. Thanks for the post; it hit the spot.

    Rest!

Just the past couple of days, I've realized just how wise God was when He laid down the principle of rest. Even though I don't believe we need to follow the Sabbath day like the OT Hebrews did, the principle of setting aside time to rest, regroup, and refresh ourselves physically and spiritually is much needed! I've been running myself ragged recently with school and haven't had a time of rest for quite a while! I've really begun to notice the effects of that. I've decided that I am going to really try to protect my Sundays since that is the best day for me to take a break.

Thank you, Erin, and even more so, thank You, God! I needed to hear this, because I don't get much sleep at night, whether I"m stressing out, or I'm worrying about my future, but God's just telling me to stop freaking out, and go to sleep! How's your baby, Erin? I'm 16, and already gearing up to be an awesome wife and mom, thanks to you!

I totally agree. I've been really stressed about alot of different stuff and i've not been getting the sleep that I need. i'm so down and depressed during the day and I am sooooo emotional. Sleep is extremely good and I am so glad that God gave it to us.

I agree that lack of sleep can really change your outlook on life. If I get little sleep I don't do/want to do my school or anything really (except easily getting mad at people). If I get good sleep then I'm gladish to do my school and other things (and don't get mad at people). I thank God for giving us the 'talent' of sleep.

Wow i never really thought that sleep could do all that to the human mind/body. It's awesome! There's such a simple solution to depression that no one really realizes-sleep!! I am a girl who most definitely needs her sleep!! I sleep 10-12 hours a day, but I am a very active girl, so it's not like I'm lazy or anything!!

I am highly amused that the discussion on motherhood is somehow interrupted by the necessity of sleep. Do I see a pattern? ;)

I myself feel EXTREMELY sleep-deprived lately. I DEFINITELY do NOT get enough sleep, EVER. Part of the reason is that I just enjoy staying up late, having the house to myself, but not feeling alone. Some of my most connective moments with God have come because I was staying up late, and I was free to experience him without being worried that a family member would walk in on me or something. (Like Elijah, I am very nervous about what other people think of me. I'm too embarrassed to display my deep devotion to God. I'm working on it.) Heck, even as I speak it's almost 1am.

...I should go to bed.... I've never asked for prayers before, but I have a real need for more sleep, and I simply do not have the willpower to force myself to retire every night. It would be great if you guys could remember me in your prayers; I need all the help I can get. But of course, no pressure. Thanks so much. Bless you all, and may you have long nights of rest with plenty of wonderful dreams!

I love to sleep in. It's summer now and I'll go to bed between 10:30-12:00 because I always get tired around that time and I'll sleep in until about 11 the next morning. that's about 11-14 hours of sleep there. Isn't that awesome? I listen to the hip hop on my ipod to lull me to sleep and then I snooze like a baby. How late do you guys sleep in till? Some of my guy friends and girl friends go to bed at like 1-3 at night and snooze till like 2-5 the next day. i think that's crazy...but whatever.
