This may seem like a silly question, since you're reading this as a visitor to liesyoungwomenbelieve.com, but have you heard of the book Lies Young Women Believe? I've been amazed Lies Young Women Believehow many of you have come to this site recently because you've just discovered the book or heard about it from a friend. I can only assume that some of you have come to this site through search engines and may not even realize that this blog was created to support the book by the same name.

If that's the case, here are a few things you may not know:

  • Lies Young Women Believe (LYWB) was written by Nancy Leigh DeMoss and Dannah Gresh. Nancy and Dannah are two of my favorite people on the whole planet. They are wise and funny and great writers. You'll love them too!
  • The book tackles the top 25 lies young women believe. Here's a taste:
    • God should fix my problems.
    • Beautiful girls are worth more.
    • It's okay to go out with a non-Christian.
    • I am my own authority.
    • My youth pastor is my connection to God.

            Good stuff, huh?

  • The book encourages several action steps such as the "Truth-speakers relationship pledge" and the "Thirty-Day challenge." These challenges are designed to help you live out what God teaches you through the book.
  • LYWB will teach you how to identify lies in your own life and replace them with God's Word.
  • There is a LYWB Companion Guide that provides you with a daily study to help you dig deep into God's Word. It also has tons of ideas and helps for leading a LYWB group study.

It's really, really good stuff. I'm not just saying that because I write for the blog. I use the book and companion guide often in ministry in my local church. I have seen this book's power to change lives!

If you've already read Lies Young Women Believe, we'd love to hear about how it has impacted you. If not, let me encourage you to check it out. To get the ball rolling, we will give away a copy of the book and the companion guide to the first three of you who ask for it. And then ... start reading!

I do now about the book, doing research on books at Amazon this book came out as a recomendation for me and then doing further research I found this blog which I've been reading since November. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to get it, but coming to the blog, reading the comments and also reading the archives is very helpful for me.
I would love to have the book, but if this is not my time I know I'll keep it on my list until I'll have the opportunity to buy it.

    age appropriate for this book?
on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 10:08 am
I was recommended to this site by another mom...I'm the mom of an 11 yr old daughter. I just wondered if you would recommend the book to someone of that age? I know some of the blogs have been too mature for her to read, but some have been very age appropriate. She's young at 11, but will be entering Middle School this fall, and I'm told that a lot of maturing and growing...and talking...happens during these years.

Thanks so much for these postings. What a great outreach!

I've read the book several times now! I loved it! It really helped to expose lies I was believing about my worth and opened my eyes to lies I never even knew I was believing. This is a book that I recommend every teen girl should read!

I'm not sure if I'm one of the first three, but I would LOVE to read the book that began this blog. The blog itself has helped me see things so differently, especially about Satan...now I see I've been tricked by him so much in the past.

I just recently discovered this website and love all the timely advice offered! I enjoy listening to Nancy's radio show every once in a while (when it's pertinent to me as a young woman) and have enjoyed purusing this website.

I would love to have a copy of "Lies Young Women Believe"! Could I have one? I think I and my sisters could really benefit from the book.

Thanks so much! Blessings on your ministry!

    Our LYWB Bible Study
on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 4:25 pm
    Erin,
We love the book! Currently, we have 26 girls registered for the 2010 Young Ladies Summer Bible Study featuring THIS BOOK! We were hoping for 5-7, but God multiplied. We meet every Monday night from 7-9. The young ladies are rising 7th - 12th graders from all different churches in our community. Tonight we are discussing Chapters 9 & 10! The girls are keeping Summer Truth Journals answering the questions in the back of the book as they read chapters each week. The hosting church graciously and generously offered to buy each girl the book and the Gideons of our area offered each girl a Bible. Please pray for our Bible Study as we continue to present the truth-filled Gospel of Jesus. And, pass along to Danah and Nancy that some hearts are rejecting lies for the first time and accepting truth in new and exciting ways as the "seed" is planted. Thank you,
    April

Yes, I've read the book. It's AWESOME! I've been through a spiritual storm over the past two months and reading that book opened my eyes to several different lies that I believed that have caused lots of problems. It was just an amazing encouragement for me to read through the book and realize that I'm not the only one out there that struggles in life. Another thing that I really liked about the book was how down to earth and up front the authors were about topics that are hard to discuss. They didn't skirt around the dirty secret sins and temptations that we all deal with in life. They just came right out and addressed the issues and said what needed to be said. I just really appreciated that. The book, in fact, is what led me to this blog. And the blog itself has been really encouraging to me. It's jsut really nice to know that there are other girls out there that struggle with the same things that I do. Thanks, Erin, for all your great posts. And thanks to all you girls that participate through your comments.
I already have the book, but I would love to get another copy that I can give away to friend.

One of the lies in the book
on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 5:31 pm
ok so i was reading your book and i saw that one of the lies that we believe is that its ok to break the law if it doesn't hurt anybody...the thing is, i read a book called the hidding place and it takes place during WWII. it is about a Christian family, an old man and his two daughters-they are in there fifteys. the family hides Jews in there house and that was against German and Holland's laws. But they were saving there lives...i'm a little confused because throughout the book, the narrorator talks about how God keeps blessing her and saving the people she loves and all that but i thought we shouldn't break the law...im confused...can someone help??

P.S.-You should really read the hiding place, it is an AMAZING book!!!

    Hi
I'd like to tell you alittle bit about how your book was used here at our church. Last summer, we were looking for a study to really impact our jr high and high school girls. We came across your book and knew it was just what we were searching for. We broke it down by using a couple of lies a week so we were able to spread it throughout the whole year (Sept - April). It was a TOTAL success for not only our girls, but for us as leaders. We all were challenged and had new understanding to so many topics. Thank you so much.
We are back to searching for a new study for this fall and are disappointed that we just can't use this one again, but since it would be a repeat for so many it is not an option. : (
(I am not looking to "win" anything, just wanted you all to be aware of how your faithfulness has blessed us all.
    Keep looking up,
    carol

on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at 12:53 pm
@ Rhoda- I wish that I had read this book when I was in middle school! I think that you should read it before her, and read it WITH her, so if she has questions you can answer them, and that way, you can decide for yourself if she doesn't need to read some of it until she is older. That is my take. I think that I would have saved myself from alot of wrong thinking as a teen if I had read this earlier.

@Rebeccac- I think that the main thing is, in The Hidding Place, the government was going against God. They were disobeying Him, and there is a verse that says "we ought to obey God rather than man" so I think that nowadays it is different. Our government isn't telling us to go against what God's word says, so we should totally obey all the laws! But if one day they like outlaw church or something, I think that we should follow God instead of man. Make sense?
