A "Gentle and Quiet Spirit" Exhibit

Hey, chicas! I thought we'd have a little fun today.

two girlsMeet Sammy and Melanie. They are two fictitious girls, but imagine they're real, ‘kay? Because they could be.

Here's what I want you to do. Read their bios, and let me know which one has a "gentle and quiet spirit."

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, here's a little background. This week on the blog, Erin's challenged us to be "make-up free" for a week based on God's beauty prescription in 1 Peter 3:3–4:

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it [your beauty] should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

Let me know if you think Sammy or Melanie would win the award for a "gentle and quiet spirit," and then come back tomorrow to hear which one took the prize, and to learn more about what this "gentle and quiet spirit" thing is all about. Oh—and I'd love to hear if you think you have this kind of spirit or not. Thanks for playing!

Exhibit A: Sammy is the oldest of seven kids—and the only girl! When she's not at school, you'll find her four-wheeling, riding horses, or fishing with her brothers. Once you meet her, you won't forget her. She has fiery red hair, and when you say something funny, she throws her head back and laughs—only it comes out more like a snort! Her mom tells her to use her "inside voice," but Sammy doesn't seem to have one. She loves life, God, and people, and gives everything 100 percent.

Exhibit B: Melanie is a "sweet, quiet thing." At least that's how the older ladies at church describe her. She almost never talks (at least in public), but if you approach her, you might be rewarded with a smile.  She has a beautiful voice, but didn't try out for choir because she was too afraid to sing in front of others. This seems to be a trend . . . her stomach hurts all the time, and her doctor thinks it's because of anxiety. She's most happy when she's curled up on the sun porch with a big book by a dead pastor or theologian.

Neither one is gentle and quiet, The frrst one may be gentle.but she's so loud(hence not quiet) that she doesn't have an inner voice! The other one is quiet, but only because she's shy and not necessarily because she's gentle.

I will vote for exhibit A. I think that Sammy demonstrates the quiet and gentle spirit because clearly her heart is at peace before God. Though she does not sound demure, I think she is gentle because she treats those around her with kindness. "Gentle and quiet" does not necessarily mean that one is quiet in her speech and withdrawn in her manner -- in fact, this could be (though I am not saying that it is always) evidence of someone who has not fully embraced the joy of the Lord and the delight of walking with God. It sounds like that is the case with Exhibit B, who you noted struggles with anxiety and would rather not be with people.

Melanie is the one with the quiet and gentle spirit. But Sammy is not bad or anything.

    My Answer!

I think exhibet A should win the award for gentle and quiet spirit. There is nothing wrong with being quiet. I'm quiet a lot, but there's a balence. I don't think God wants us to be so scared of everything that we feel sick all the time. He wants us to be confident in ourselves. We shouldn't be afraid to be all we can be and use our talents for His glory!

Well....way to make this a tough one...I'd say Sammy is the one with the gentle and quiet Spirit..."gentle and quiet spirit" doesn't necessarily mean that you are quiet. It says gentle and quiet spirit, not quiet voice. :)

A gentle and quiet spirit is one that radiates God. Sammy "loves life, God and people, and gives everything 100 percent." Even with the short bio you can see so much of who she is. (or would be if she were a real person. :D )

Melanie does not have a gentle and quiet Spirit, but a quiet voice. And her Spirit is in unrest. She seems to be always anxious and fearful. She also does not seem very confident.

A gentle and quiet Spirit radiates a peace and strength from God. <3

My vote is for Exhibit A because I think her life testifies to the fact that she has a beautiful spirit. She is gentle and quiet in that she trusts God in everything and loves Him very much!

I agree with Brittany Lee. Sammy exhibits a quiet and gentle spirit even though she does not have a quiet and gentle personality. They are 2 different things, thank goodness! :D

I think it is Sammy, a gentle and quiet spirit is not necessarily always 'quiet' :)

    Hard to say!
on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 11:40 am
Well, I think that neither of them have got the whole "gentle and quiet" spirit down. It seems as if Melanie doesnt trust God enough to get rid of at least some of her anxiety (but i used to have anxiety problems so i know its hard...but still...). And it seems like Sammy has strong faith in God, but seems to cover it up with her out-going loudness!
I am definitly more like Sammy, and its kinda funny because there are seven kids in my family too, but im the fifth but the oldest girl, lol. So i dont think there is a for sure answer to this one.....hmmmm.....

i think A wins the prize. she's confident in her relationship with God and with herself. she doesn't hold back but gives her full potential. someone could have a gentle and quiet spirit and be an introvert and not very outgoing, like melanie, but Melanie doesn't have one because she's always so nervous and unconfident.

also i don't we should take it literally meaning we have to have very quiet voices or be incredibly gentle. you can be loud and a little rough like sammy and still have a gentle and quiet spirit.

    I think Sammy.
When the Bible says a gentle and quiet spirit
it means exactly that: SPIRIT. I know this girl should be a little better, but she matches the qualities way more than Melanie.

not enough info... could be either... or neither. I don't think your personality determines your spirit, it's more about how your relationship w/Christ effects your attitude and interaction w/others.

    It is Sammy
on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 7:12 pm
It is Sammy. Having a gentle and quiet spirit does not mean that you don't have a personality or are not talkative. It means that you at peace with God and radiate his spirit. Melanie does not seem to really show Gods peace, and if she never talks, how the heck do we know whether or not she is gentle?

Both! But mostly A. The last sentence said: She gave God 100%. That seems pretty convincing to me.

I think it would be Sammy... she's living her life to the fullest, not hiding inside a shell... you don't have to be a quiet shy thing to match 1 Peter 3: 3-4... at least I think :)

    My Answer: NEITHER!

My answer is definitely NEITHER. I can't wait to hear how you explain it tomorrow, Paula!

PS This was a cute idea, by the way.

I couldn't be Melanie. I don't believe that having a gentle and quiet spirit means that you live life as a hermit. Melanie definetly seems to have the gentle and quiet personality, but it seems to come out of a spirit of fear, not the Spirit of God. Sammy, upon appearances, doesn't have a gentle, quiet personality, but... Like Melanie's case, I'm not sure that you can really judge a person's spirit by thier personality.

Everyone tells me that I laugh really loudly. I don't try to, that's just the way that I am. I've often wondered, does that mean that I don't have a gentle and quiet spirit?

I guess I would have to say Sammy, because it couldn't be Melanie. Thanks for the challenge!

    Gentle and Quiet?
on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 12:18 am
It's hard to tell but I believe that Sammy has more of a gentle and quiet spirit like mentioned above because of her apparent love for God and others, as opposed to Melanie who suffers from anxiety and lets her fear hold her down. However, in real life we might misinterpret what a gentle and quiet SPIRIT really means and assume we're required to be externally silent and agreeable, instead of at peace and comforted by God's promises.

One seems to be gentle but not quiet, and viceversa. According to what we read, a beauty and gentle spirit is much more than that

either one of them could be a "gentle and quiet spirit"
on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 11:22 pm
I don't have an opinion because either one of them could be it. They both have ways that they could be and ways that they couldn't be. But if I had to choose I would probably have to choose Sammy.
