Do We Always Have to Be Happy?

fake smileHere's what being a Christian does mean:
  • We can have joy because we have much to celebrate.
  • We have hope that our present circumstances are nothing compared to the reward our God has promised us.
  • In all circumstances we can give thanks because of what God has saved us from.

Here's what it doesn't mean:

  • We have to wear a constant smile.
  • Life will always be butterflies and roses.
  • Depression will never knock on the door of our hearts.

Sometimes we get the message that because we have tremendous hope in Christ, we should never allow ourselves to feel emotions like sadness, anger, fear, or even depression. But this isn't what the Bible teaches. Check out the raw emotions of some of these Bible heroes.

But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry (Jonah 4:1).

Elijah was afraid and ran for his life.... He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors" (1 Kings 19:3–4).

I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body. I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart (King David in Psalm 38:6–8).

He looked around them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand" (Jesus in Mark 3:5).

The bottom line is that we live fractured lives in a broken world. We often face difficult circumstances that can cause us to feel things like anger, sadness, and anxiety. God never asks us to stuff those feelings or to sweep them under the rug. It doesn't make you a better Christian to always have a smile on your face.

The Bible doesn't give us a green light to allow our emotions to run amuck. But we don't have to wear a mask of fake happiness either. No matter what you're feeling, give yourself permission to be honest about it with your Savior. I know for a fact He'd love to hear about it.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).

The Bible never says "Be Happy" but in so many places "Be Holy" because that is what God is!

Maybe it isn't a given that a Christian will be happy all the time. I know that I certainly am not.

But I DO think that it is wrong to just wallow in depression.

What an encouragement! Thanks! Over the past couple months God has brought me through a trial that has been very painful. But through it He taught me to trust that He knows what He's doing and I need to be thankful for everything, not just the "good" things. God was not lying when He said that ALL things will work out for the good of those who love Him. Praise His Name! God is good, and He only allows things in our lives that will work out for our benefit in the long run.

    Hello!
I totally agree! As mentioned in one of the passages, Jesus was most of the time grieved over the people! I suffered with depression for a couple of weeks because of some problems I have with OCD. (obsessive compulsive disorder) But God delivered me! =] We go through times like that in our life and either they draw us away from Jesus, or closer.

ok, well i'm confused. i've been going through a hard time that seems like its never going to end andi just want it all to stop. so yeah, i'm having a really hard time, and i do try and plaster on a pretend smile like everythings ok. But doesn't it say in the bible, in philippians 4v4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! so doesnt that mean we should at least pretend to be happy?

This post was very encouraging to me because I felt like I was doing something wrong just because I wasn't as happy as usual. But I agree with Corey that we shouldn't be wallowing in depression.

I thank God for leading me to this website. I have been blessed so much in my walk with Christ since I started reading. This ministry and Revive our Hearts has been so helpful to me. Keep doing what you're doing! God is doing great things through you and changing lives for His glory.

Yeah we have those feelings cause we're human. Everything we experience makes us more like God and closer to Him :)
also, a prayer request: my Grandma has a hard stubborn heart. she is hesitant to accept the Lord as her Christ and Savior. please pray for an open heart and honesty

I have realized that even though we are Christians, we will still feel let down, angry, hurt, depressed ect. but I think that the point should be to work through all of our troubles with God's help. We should try not to stay stuck in all of our problems, but we should lean on God, and know that He has our wold in His hands and that He will help us through the toughest of times. So, what I got out of this blog was that, even though we may feel angry and depressed, with God's help we can work through our messy lives and be the beautiful girls He ment for us to be!

I'm glad you posted this :) I think I'm an optimistic person, and I try to show that when friends of mine are feeling down especially. I have my moments too when I feel down or angry though, and sometimes I forget that that's not a bad thing, it's a human thing. I just have to remember that God is always there; when I'm down and when I'm happy. Again, thanks :)

    Rejoice
on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 7:22 am
The Bible says, Rejoice in Lord always. Again i will say, rejoice! But at times it's very difficult to rejoice in the Lord when things are not going the way you want.

But being a child of God, you have to rejoice in the LORD because HE knows the reason why you are going through that situation.

    God Bless you!

    Country Girl:
    I am praying for you.
Even though I have no idea who you are or what you need prayer for, I am still praying for you.

    And Miss A.
I am praying that your grandma will open her heart to God and exept Him as her savior.

And as for me, I have a prayer request for a friend. She doesn't know the Lord as her savior, and she scoffs and changes the subject if I bring it up. She doesn't even seem to want anything to do with God.

Even in hard times there are things we can rejoice about. Like...the fact that God created us at all. The fact that He sent His Son to pay the penalty for our sin. The inheritance that He promises us in His Word...

It is a choice to let our minds dwell on these things rather than whatever might be weighing us down.

I am so sorry that you are going through a hard time right now. That's not fun. But even in the most difficult circumstances, God has given us a lot to be thankful for. What can you thank Him for today?

Thank You so much for posting this. I have be thinking alot about this. People always say to me that I always seem to be smileing. My friends call me Miss.Smiles. They see a type of joy in my my life that they can not understand, because it is the kind of joy you can only have when you have God in your life. Alot of my friends are not christian, and they know I am a Chirstian and I think I am a witness to them because they see the Joy of the Lord in my life. I love it that the can see God in my life, but its tuff when I go through times when I am not all smilely and joyful. I feel like I always need to be joyful and happy to be a witness. Is that wrong? How can I be a better witness?
