Twenty-One Resolutions for 2011

Are you a New Year's resolution maker? I'm not. Over the years I've found the tradition of vowing to change at the start of the new year to be an exercise in disappointment. Every year my diets fail, my habits stay the same, and my resolutions to do things differently fall flat.

Maybe that's because I've been focusing on the wrong things.

There's nothing wrong with making the choice to be healthier or try new things at the start of a new year. But this year I'm feeling motivated to make changes that truly matter. I want the same for you.

As I think about you and what I hope for you in 2011, my thoughts keep circling back to the impact of God's truth. Most of you come to this site because you've already been exposed to God's truth in some way. But I see evidence in your lives (and in my own life) that that truth hasn't truly transformed the way you live.

There's a difference between knowing God's truth and fully embracing it. I can't imagine the ways your lives would change if you chose to believe all God says about you and your life in His Word and allowed that truth to change the way you live. It's even more exciting for me to envision the difference you could have on your generation by knowing God's truth, believing it, and putting it into action. That thought gives me goose bumps.

I'm hoping to motivate you to live out God's truth in 2011. That means you've got to get serious about learning His Word (more about that later this week), make the choice to believe what He says in His Word, and allow His Word to change the way you live.

I'll help you get started. In the last chapter of “Lies Young Women Believe”, Nancy and Dannah list several powerful truths to counter everyday lies. Over the next few days I'm going to present these truths in the form of action steps. Your job is to identify the areas of your life that are in need of a dose of God's truth and put that truth to work in your own life.

Ready? Let's choose truth together!

1. I will praise God on good days and bad days this year.

God's truth says, "You are good, and what you do is good " (Psalm 119:68).

When everything is going right, it's easy to believe God is good and to praise Him because of it. But when life gets tough, we are tempted to question God's goodness and "forget" to praise Him. When your life gets messy, you can choose to believe God's Word rather than trusting your emotions and praise God in all circumstances.

2. I will live like I am deeply loved this year.

God's truth says, "The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness'" (Jeremiah 31:3).

Feeling unloved can have a huge impact on the way we live. Specifically, believing the lie that no one cares about you can lead to depression, anxiety, and destructive behaviors. The truth is that you are deeply loved by God. If you believe God's love is real and receive it, it will transform your life.

3. I will spend more time working on my inner beauty than my outer beauty this year.

God's truth says, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well" (Psalm 139:14).

God's Word says you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Choose to believe it, and allow that truth to free you from the constant need to make yourself look beautiful on the outside.

4. I will pay less attention to what others think of me this year.

God's truth says, "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves" (Ephesians 1:4–6).

When a friend, a parent, or a fella rejects us, it's easy to let that rock our world. It's also easy to get wrapped up in trying to please the people around us in order to avoid that rejection. But God's truth is that He chose you and loved you enough to adopt you into His family. Choosing to fully embrace that truth provides the perspective we need to be less concerned about what others think.

5. I won't use stuff to make me feel good this year.

God's truth says, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want" (Psalm 23:1).

God is enough to satisfy your needs. If you have Him, you have everything you need. Believing this truth allows you to stop trying to make yourself feel better by having the right stuff. You already have what you need.

We'll look at 16 more truths in the next couple days. In the meantime, I'd love to hear from you. Do you need to put any of these truths into action in your own life? What changes can you make in 2011 to live out God's truth more fully? How would doing so change your life and the lives of those around you?

I love this post, it is so true! So many times I complain to God about how things aren't going my way and how I would really like them to go like this...instead of being content with what I have. That being said, I think that it would be very good for me if I continually praised God and if I worked on my inner beauty more then my outer. I also think that I should pay less attention to what people think of me. If I actually did this I think that the people around me would start to notice a big change, I think that they would notice that something was truly different about me and had changed a lot. I think that they would notice me maturing and becoming who I want to be. The biggest change that they noticed would probably be not caring what other people think and having a better self-confidence. I have a HUGE problem with self-confidence, I am tensed up all the time and I can't relax no matter how hard I try. My friends notice and they'll point it out to me, "just relax, Chloe, you'll be fine" or "Chloe, why are you always so tensed up? Just relax." I can't though, I really want to but I just can't. I wonder if I stopped caring about what people think so much and started relaxing more and relied on what God says more then what people say. It might help some. Does anybody have any other ideas that might help?

    Wow thank you :)
I'm going to enjoy this. Also, I like to use the term "commitment" rather than resolution. I stink at any kind of goal, but I'm going to try to follow these all year, for the rest of my life

I need to apply all those into my life. Fully refusing God is my main concern in 2011.I like to have control over my life until I make things get out of control. I want to learn that God is always in control.. Thank you!

Thanks, Erin. Really good post. A good way to remember these "resolutions" is to pray that God would help you do them every day. Another thing that has proven to enrich my life is asking God to use me for His kingdom. You'd be surprised what "coincidences" happen. And, just as a testimony, a year ago, I decided that (with God's help!) I was going to be kinder to my brother, and show him patience, and respect, even when I felt he didn't deserve it. And you wouldn't believe the impact it had on my family-before, I'd been so condescending and rude to him, and we fought all the time, but now my family is so much more at peace, and I thank God that he helped me make that decision! Just a testimony to what God can do in your life. God bless! :)

    Truth #4
on Monday, December 27, 2010 at 11:45 pm
Hi!! I loved this post, but I have a question.
How can I stop worrying about what others think of me? I know I am respected and loved at church by the older people and by some of the girls, but I suspect that some girls (with whom I don't relate very much because they are most of the time talking about guys) and also some girls at school talk about me because of the way they act, I have never heard them but I cann't get rid of that feeling... and I want to be free of that.
I cann't stop thinking about what others might think and say of me because I have darker skin than they have and so on. I know that the Lord made me exactly like He wanted me to be, but I have never been able to overcome that. And that is not the only thing for which I feel...I don know....

The points you wrote about are soo true Erin, and they are all things I know I need to work on. I guess its just the same old issue of not being able to let go, I mean knowing God is enough because it says in the Bible and actually believing it and acting on it are two different things..I always have doubts about letting it all go and letting God take over! I always think im gona lose out or something, it really sucks!

Chloe, when I read your comment I immediately thought "Because He Loves Me"! It is a book by Elyse Fitzpatrick which I highly recommend and that really changes your focus. You should be able to find it on christianbooks.com or even Amazon. I'll be praying for you, too!

Erin, great post!!! Dude, I have sooooo messed up this year. I can't wait for a fresh new year! My issue from this year is number five: using stuff to make me feel good. My specific stuff is sex. Ugh. I hate to admit it but I need to. If you would pray for me, that would be greatly appreciated. :) I'm now a born again Christian but i am still struggling a lot.
Thanks and love from your sister in Christ,

    Hey, Lisy!

That's tough! I think we all fight the urge to pay too much attention to what others are thinking (especially us girls!)

But, it's not true that you "can't stop thinking about what others might say." You do have power over your thought life with Christ's help.

2 Corinthians 10:5b says, "and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

We can take our thoughts captive and make them obey His commands to live our lives to please Jesus, not man.

Have you read "Lies Young Women Believe?" It gives some really practical advice for how to choose truth.

In addition to reading that (or re-reading it!) I suggest you find some verses about what God things of you and meditate on them. That just means focus on them until they really sink in to your heart. Put them on your bathroom mirror, your school notebooks, your car steering wheel. Read them out loud every morning. CHOOSE to let what God thinks of you become your focus.

I would love to know which verses you pick. Leave me a comment and tell me about it.

I just wanted to encoruage you...

Romans 8:1-4 (New International Version, ©2010)

Romans 8: 1-4 says, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit."

Did you catch that? No condemnation for you, sweet girl! Jesus has paid the price for you sin and made a way for you to be set free from the bondage of sin. Lean on Him this year!
