Good News: Good Girls Are En Vogue and Hollywood Is Listening

I love this recent headline from Foxnews.com:

"Bad Girls Are So 2008: Hollywood Embraces the Goody Two Shoes Brigade"

girl playing ukelelThe story highlights a new trend among the Hollywood elite—wholesomeness. The story points out that wild stars who openly party, flaunt their sexuality, and commit criminal acts have recently dropped off the face of the pop culture earth and have been replaced by a much milder group of female stars.

The author writes:
"Today's starlets are hard working and wholesome, and it is paying off with movie roles and endorsement deals."
It turns out that these days stars who are known for good behavior are the only ones getting movie deals, magazine cover shoots, and million dollar contracts. Actresses who are wild can't get a break and are no longer getting paid. Why the shift? Because of you!
"The Q scores measure how likable celebrities are. Bad girls' ... positive Q scores are dwarfed by their negative scores, indicating the public's distaste for their antics.

"‘In the cases of the bad girls, the negative is five to ten times higher,' [Steven] Levitt [of Marketing Evaluations] says. ‘We're talking about substantial turn-offs.'

"Brands and marketers turn to the Q score before deciding to sign a celeb for a multi-million dollar endorsement deal."
You've been voting about who should be a star every time you see a movie, watch a TV show, or pick up a magazine (or refuse to support a show because the content is questionable or star is a poor role model). The good news is that Hollywood is listening. This article even pointed out that stars who had previously tried to market themselves as "bad girls" or as overly sexual have cleaned up their acts in order to better meet the public's preferences.

Certainly, being good enough for movie roles and marketing deals isn't the ultimate goal. God desires for each of these girls to know Him as Savior and to exude "good" behavior because they are striving for holiness. But the fact that good behavior is being held up as a good thing gives me great hope because a) it proves that as Christians, we can in fact influence our culture by sticking to media choices that line up with God's standards, and b) it makes standing for purity and holiness and virtuousness a little easier for girls like you.

When bad girls are en vogue they make the party lifestyle look glamorous. It isn't really, of course ... sin never is. But still, it exaggerates the temptation to experiment, sass, party, or live like a wild woman. The winds of change can switch direction quickly, but at least for now being like Hollywood starlets means exercising self-control.

What's the practical application for you? Keep making media choices that line up with the standards of God's Word—Hollywood is watching. And keep striving to live more and more like Christ. It's the best way to live whether it's in style or not.

I know this is off topic sorry. But I have a question on a recent blog you did. It was How to Spot an Idol. By the way I think you did a great job on it and thank you for writing it! But, what do you do if you have an idol in your life. I know I have to get rid of it but how? What are some things I can do? My idol is band. I love band and music way more than I should. I know it's an idol but how do I stop it from being an idol? Do I have to quit band? My parents want me in it so I don't think they would want me to just drop out, but what do I do then to stop it from being an idol? Summer break is coming up but I am doing marching band so it's not like I am going to not do band all summer long. Also, since it is an idol I want to start working on it right now. I don't want to say, "Well band is stopping soon so I'll just wait to fix this problem." I am sinning and I want to stop it now! Please help! Thank you again for this post! Also, I would love it if anyone else who has advice would leave comments for me. I love getting advice from Christians around my age as well. Thank you!

For me I have two younger sibs and as the oldest I have learnt that it is important for me not to expose them media and other things that are not appropiate for them. Already I am reaping the consequences for my actions as my nine year sister is used to seeing inappropriate kissing etc so now I am making a big effort to guard their innocence.

I think its really awesome that people in Hollywood and other big cities are beginning to hire people who display themselves as a good people. I think if the actors and actresses/models should be doing well in school and be nice on set, because none of the directors want to be treated unfairly by someone they've hired to make lots of money. I think it is unfair when people hire "bad girls" because it just doesnt make sense to hire someone who will just treat you badly and wear skimpy clothes down the red carpet. I'm really glad that Hollywood has thought twice about the people they hire, because those people have to represent who they're working for. A lot of these good actresses and singers have a lot of talent and it should be displayed as such. That way there won't be so many tabloids filled with raunchy celebrity gossip.

I am so glad to hear that some actresses/models are listening. This is so encouraging. Praise God for the shift.

This is great and so encouraging! I hope this trend keeps up! :)
It's not necessarily universal, though. Lady Gaga and Ke$ha are both extremely famous singers and I wouldn't consider their lyrics 'wholesome' or their clothing 'modest'. Just a thought.

I am bittersweet about hollywood hiring "goody two-shoe" actor/actresses. Its good that they are looking for more wholesome people, but its a possibility that they can lose some of that wholesomeness. Like, i don't know if any of you have seen Grease, they turned Sandy inside out. I mean after two seconds of being with the "popular kids" , she is already changing bit by bit. Hollywood is a very worldy place, but i mean who knows, those wholesome people might just turn Hollywood upside down! So, as you can probably see, i am reallly having mixed feelings about it!!!

hey Meghan! I just read your comment that you made, and i think that you shouldn't completley stop band. I know its something that you struggle with, but i think you should read scriptures and try not to always have band on your mind! Not saying not to love/like band,(I love swimming) but to just not make it your everything, think about things that are more important, like your Heavenly Father!!! I hope that helped a little!!! Praying 4 ya!!!!!! -CeCe

What a wonderful post!!!:) Amen to that!!:) This post was really encouraging!!:)

My dream is to see one day a revival to come to Hollywood and for the celebrities to come to know the Lord. Have you heard of the Hollywood Prayer Network??:) It's a ministry that reaches out to Hollywood and the celebrities!!:)

God loves the celebrities and we should pray that God continues to put Godly men and women in the celebrities lives and to reach out to them and to the entire entertainment industry!!:)

One could only imagine what would happen if there was a revival in Hollywood!!:)

What a great post!!!:) Blessings on this wonderful ministry!!:)

While I'm glad Hollywood is, well, producing some cleaner stuff, I can't be as thrilled about it as everyone else. I guess because the main reason they're catering to us is because of us-- the consumers. Good girls are making them money, at least until they go downhill. It has sooo little to do with God, spirituality, or His standards that it just seems to shallow to me.

Perhaps the above is too glass-half-empty. But the world is sinful, and something about this just seems wrong...?

I am so happy to hear this, they are finally getting rid of people like Lindsay Lohan and all of those people who you see in the magazines that got wasted over the weekend. I remember when I was in middle school and I would become obessed with an actor or an actress, or a band. I think that it's pretty common for middle school girls to do that, and even high school girls. Just usually not as bad as middle school girls are. This should help teens and pre-teens readjust who their favorite actors are and all that stuff, and have their role models be better people.

    Hey Meghan,

Erin has asked me to respond to your blog post.

It is good that you are searching your heart and desiring to get rid of the idols in your life. An idol is anything that takes the place God rightly deserves in your heart. Everything we do in our lives should be done to please Him and bring honor and glory to Him.

God gives us talents that He longs to use to bring glory to Him. Music holds a very special place in God’s heart. It is good for us to enjoy using our talents for Him. Not everyone can play a musical instrument. We can learn to play our music in a way that brings honor and glory to Him and not to ourselves. We can play and not seek the praise of men, but only the praise of God – it’s been said that we play to an audience of One (the Lord). By choosing to dedicate your talents to the Lord and seeking to use them to honor Him rather than achieve glory for yourself, you can rid yourself of this idol and experience the joy and freedom of making music to the Lord!

Continue to seek the Lord, Meghan, and spend time each day with the Lord and in prayer. Keep Him number One in your life – Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Col. 3:23-24

    Serving Him,
    Lorree
