What does surfing have to do with life in the Spirit?

Recently, God has been teaching me that just as I cannot please Him apart from His Son, I cannot live a life that's pleasing to Him apart from His Holy Spirit.

It all started several months ago when our staff began watching the "Flow" video series by Pastor John Ortberg, who said life in the Spirit was like . . . surfing! surfing

A surfing instructor once taught Pastor Ortberg how to center himself on the board, catch a wave, and ride it in to shore. But the one thing the instructor couldn't teach him was how to create a wave. Just as Pastor Ortberg had no chance of creating the power source needed to surf, so you and I cannot live the Christian life without "catching the wave" of His Spirit and harnessing His power all day long! You'll know you're maturing and growing in Christ when . . . after falling, it takes you less time to catch the next wave.

I used to think being a good Christian meant acting like one, striving to be one. I'm slowly learning that it's letting the very-alive Spirit of God take over every part of me and do what's natural for Him (and absolutely unnatural for me!). When I see Him responding through me to frustrating situations in ways I never could on my own, I am absolutely in awe of Him!

So how about you? Have you been living your life in the power of the flesh or filled with the Spirit? (These are the only two options, according to God's Word!) "Live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature" (Gal. 5:16).

It's time to ride some waves, girls! "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit" (Gal. 5:25).

God, thank You for gifting us, sealing us with Your precious, powerful Holy Spirit when we trusted in Christ as our Savior and Lord. Forgive us for misunderstanding, undervaluing, ignoring, and quenching Your Spirit (1 Thess. 5:19). Would you teach us more and more how to live in the power of the Spirit rather than in self-effort? We want to keep being filled with Your Spirit from minute to minute, staying in the "flow" so we might be Your powerful witnesses. In Jesus' name, amen.

PS: How can you tell when you're living by the Spirit? For me, it looks like keeping short accounts with God, talking to Him frequently throughout the day—confessing sin and asking Him to fill me with His Spirit rather than living independently and self-sufficiently. It means I'm marked on the inside more by "fruits of the Spirit" like peace rather than "acts of the flesh" like anger. (Check out Galatians 5:19–26 to see what I'm talking about and to examine whether you're allowing the Holy Spirit to produce His fruit or if your flesh is boss.)

I really liked this post.... I have been going through some hard stuff lately, and have been kind of discouraged. I really liked this part:
You'll know you're maturing and growing in Christ when . . . after falling, it takes you less time to catch the next wave.

I have noticed that each time I have had to face another challenge lately, it has taken me less time to go to God. I'm glad to know that means I am growing in my relationship with him!!

Thanks for the post. I have had a lot of trouble with anger and hate in my life. Recently I have been really asking God to help me and fill me up to overflowing with His love, to pour on those around me. And, the best part is, that He is answering my prayer, slowly but surely I am able to respond with love, and I still have more to work on, I don't have it all under control, but He's helping me!

Thanks again for the challenge to live by the Spirit!

I love this post! It really spoke to me because, sometimes I want to let my flesh rule and do what I want to do. Why? Because our flesh is so weak and it seems fun at the time! But we need to crucify our flesh and lay it at the foot of the cross and give it to Christ! I am so grateful that the Lord forgives us and that His mercies are new every morning. Praise God!

I recently went through a tough breakup with a guy I know God wouldn't approve of. After dating for 7 months, you can conclude some of his bad habits (such as cussing) rubbed off on me. After we broke up I felt such a relief and realized how much this guy had held me back from my relationship with God. Now I know that I've been on the right track. I've balanced myself on the board and harnessed His power. Thank you so much(:

i really love this! (: i think its sooo cool cuz just last week i was reading a book and it used the same analogy to describe the right way to live in the Spirit(: im thinking maybe God has told me this twice now for a reason..and that maybe i should try harder to live in the Spirit-the right way(: thanx so much!

I'm not sure what it means to take less time to turn back to God when you are faced with something.

I think God is trying to teach me to hold my tongue and control my anger. I found a whole bunch of passages in the Bible (like Proverbs and James) that are telling me that I need to turn away insult and deflect my desire to have a shouting match. It's really difficult! Especially when you're in this family. But it's becoming a bit easier every day. So I guess that means I'm growing. Yay =)

this is such a great post. I have a question though; It used to be that I would run to God almost immediately, but now I wait a while before I run to Him. Is there anything that I can do about that?

Sometimes I can tell that I am getting closer to God when he answers my prayers. Or when I am sad or angry or disappointed and all of the sudden I just feel peace.

How long it takes to run to God is simply a choice. We encourage you to confess this to the Lord and ask Him to prick your heart if you are turning to something/someone other than Him. When you see that this is what you are doing, ask the Lord’s forgiveness and choose to turn back to Him. That is what repentance is – turning away from one thing and choosing to go in the opposite direction (back to God). God is right there to help you with this, Friend!

    Praying for you,

Praise the Lord for His Spirit!

I thank God for His Spirit!

When Jesus left earth, he told his disciples he was leaving behind, another, one who would be more beneficial- The Holy Spirit of God.

At first, I thought, what? How could a Spirit be better than a person? Well, the more I give my life for Christ, the more I see the importance of the Spirit, and how its so much stronger than our physical selves. In fact, I say often, "My body is in submission to my(His) Spirit". This reminds me, like stated in 1 Cor 3:16, and 2 Cor 3:17, the spirit of God is within me, and thats what leads and drives me in freedom!

Since committing my Spirit, to His Spirit, and submitting my body to that Spirit, I have done more and felt more fullness of life than I ever have before! There is true life, in denying yourself, and letting him live and lead you!

Praise The Lord, our God, for He is so loving and perfect!

How does one differentiate between the Spirit's conviction and the Enemy's condemnation?

I've been trying to be obedient to God, perhaps out of flesh, to the point where I feel guilty for very little things (things that people think I'm crazy for feeling guilty about), repent to God, and apologize to whomever I've felt that I wronged...it almost feels like it's become some type of obsession and I'm getting a little overwhelmed. But how do I know if guilt is coming from conviction or condemnation?

    Thanks!

    Anonymous,

It really hurts to have our friends fighting. It is always good to pray for them and encourage them to be kind to each other and to forgive each other. When their fighting is actually physical, then you need to get an adult involved so they can help your friends to work through their differences in a healthy way. Erin did a blog on girls fighting. You can check it out at http://www.liesyoungwomenbelieve.com/index.php?id=708.

    Praying for you!

Grace - differentiating between conviction and condemnation
on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at 1:46 pm
    Grace…

Your name speaks to the answer to your question. The difference between the Spirit's conviction and the enemy's condemnation is differentiated by grace. Satan condemns you and makes you feel guilty. The Spirit convicts you and moves you to confession and repentance. The enemy makes you feel you are not good enough. The Spirit makes you feel you can’t wait to rid yourself of sin and be close to the Father. The enemy brings oppression. The Spirit brings life and light. So, what to do…

Memorize verses on grace and every time you feel convicted of sin, tell the Heavenly Father that you are sorry you did wrong, thank Him for His conviction, and quote one of your verses! God will love it; He always honors His Word, and you will have light and life upon repeating His promises of grace and no condemnation! (See Romans 8:1 – memorize it!)

    Verses to consider…Ps. 103:10, 11, 12, 13, 14 (particularly 10 and 12!); Col. 3:12-13; Lam. 3:21-23; I John 1:9; 1 Tim. 1:14. What an incredible journey you have before you!

Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more. Rom. 5:20

    Blessings to you!

    Hi, Grace...

I'm delighted to hear the verses encouraged you! As you memorize them, I pray "grace" will abound! Proud of you with the way you hear truth and apply it!

    Blessings!
