Truth Boot CampFrom the LYWB.com team: We want to encourage you to live out God's truth in bold new ways this year, and so we've developed a series of posts we're calling Truth Boot Camp. They are based on a special section of powerful truths found on pages 203–204 in the book Lies Young Women Believe. We will be addressing each truth as a resolution or action step that you can take in the weeks to come.

Back before my writer days (when I had a job where I couldn't wear pajamas to work), I was on a business call with a coworker. I had a list in front of me of items that I needed to cover, and as we moved through the list I made neat and tidy little checkmarks on my agenda. Pretty standard business call stuff.

And then ... it happened.

We got to the end of our conversation. It was the part of the call when I was supposed to say something formal and business-y. Instead I said, "In Your name I pray, Amen."

Real professional.

Why on earth would I end a phone call that way? Because those were the words I was used to saying right after I rattled off a list to someone-specifically to God. I've made some headway in the prayer department since that embarrassing phone call, but the reality is that all too often, I approach God with a to-do list and an agenda to convince Him to change my circumstances in the way I see fit. All of that asking doesn't lead to a balanced prayer life. It doesn't make for a balanced relationship with my Savior, and it does little or nothing to open my heart up to hear what God wants to say to me.

Resolution: I will add praise, thanksgiving, listening, and confession to my prayer life this year. freight train

As part of our Truth Boot Camp, I want to encourage you to take a hard look at your own prayer life. Is it balanced? Or do you approach God with an agenda? Is your communication one-sided, with you being the one doing all the talking? Or do you take time to listen as well? Do you mostly vent to God about all that is wrong in your life, or do you take time to thank Him for all that is going right?

If you're like me, your prayer life can be a lot like a train. You chug along really well for a while, remembering to praise God, to confess your sin, and to wait quietly while you listen for Him to speak to your heart. But then, before you know it, you're off the track, talking to Jesus like He's a genie or a vending machine where you can plug in your requests and have Him spit out the answers you want. Just like a train chugging along beside the track, you can still get where you're going—meaning you can still love Jesus and serve Him, but it's going to be a bumpy ride.

You see, God wants you to come to Him with your needs, wants, and worries.

Philippians 4:6
says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."

But the Bible also highlights several other important elements to our communication with God.

Thanksgiving
"Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!" (1 Chron. 16:34).

Quiet Listening
"Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth" (Ps. 46:10).

Confession
"I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin" (Ps. 38:18).

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

These elements of prayer are for our own good. We need to give thanks in order to recognize that the gifts in our lives come from God, rather than being something we've produced in our own strength. We need to wait quietly because God's ways are not our ways, and it is important to make room for His voice to change, encourage, and challenge us. We need to confess our sins as a reminder of how desperately we need a Savior.

There's nothing wrong with asking God to intervene in your life, but if that is all you are doing your walk with Christ can easily become all about you when it needs to be all about Him.

How are you doing in each of these areas? Do you have rhythms of thanksgiving, listening, quiet waiting, and confession in your relationship with God? Or do you tend to approach your time with Him more like a business call, where you check items off your to-do list and then wrap up the conversation with routine?

I want to do what it takes to get my prayer train back on track this year by integrating each of these elements into my time with the Lord. How about you?

Thank you so much for the wonderful reminder to keep our prayers Christ focused. Prayer is difficult, but it is a definite source of joy, comfort, and conviction. :-)

Thank you for the reminder, Erin! It seems like the best times in my life have been the times where I was spending the most time alone with God, listening for His voice rather than just praying my wish list. =)

I do most of those things in my time w?God every day & I enjoy that time. But I sometimes have a little trouble being "stil" & hearing God say or impress something on me. I understand that God rarely speaks audibly & can do it throuh a song on raido, a book, or a spiritually mature friend & sometimes thru some1 who isn't follwoing God 100% (I've had that happen b4 where I think God gave me an good advice thru that person & they didn't realize it was Him!) What do you recommend 4 practicing being still? I can only do it 4 a few minutes & I don't hear anything in my spirit. I guess I just relax & remeber God is there.

I don't understand what you mean by "quiet listening". God doesn't talk straight to us....

I've really been studying about prayer lately, as our church is asking God for a revival right now, so this was really great timing. I do struggle with not thanking God for things, and instead just going down my list of requests. It really hit me that in Phillipians4:6 it also mentions thanksgiving! I think often we forget that. Thanks Erin, this really helped!

This so true erin. my prayer life well i always think it could get better. but i do praise God and seeing that he is my daddy i don't have a specific prayer i just talk him all the time which makes that sometimes i praise and worship him, sometimes i just talk to him, sometimes i sing to him and when something is bothering me, i talk to him about it. God is to me more than just God, he is my father, my friend, my comforter, my everything.BUT the only thing i haven't quite get yet is the listening part where you get quiet before him and listen, i am hoping one day very soon to finally understand first of all what it means and how you do it. Besides that i Love my relationship with my heavenly father without that prayerline i could never survive this far. The prayerline between me and God is my lifeline.

Thanks again for this blog erin and keep up the good work. God is happy with what you are doing for him, and I know in my heart he is also please with you.

I know how EXTREMELY hard it is to "be still"; I really struggle with it. But to reply towards Emy's comment, God DOES talk straight to us, just not often. I remember one time (I think I was 10), I was laying in bed feeling really lonely and left out. I asked God if he ever forgot anyone; if he forgot me. And he audibly answered "NO." It was so loud that It echoed. I thought someone was in my room, but it was just me. And God. That's the only time that he has spoken to me like that, but one time is all that was needed to grab my attention. he loves me no matter what, and he loves you like that too. =)

So i read this post yesterday and saw your question about how can we be still and listen when God dosnt speak straight to us, i have no idea why i didnt reply right then...but something nagged me to check the post again today, i believe it was the Holy Spirit..

Emy, God DOES SPEAK, and no it might not be all the time, it might not be when we want it, but it is when HE knows we need it most. God speaks through Prophets EVEN to this day, I am a witness. My grandmother, my uncle and one of my cousins, all have the gift of prophecy....( I KNOW, right now some of you might call me crazy, but I promise by God its true and real)

He does speak very directly, and sometimes, He dosnt even need a prophet to speak to you, he very well CAN just say it and u know u heard it from God like Emma has said...

I personally have encountered this many times, God can also speak to a person by this: YOU personally pray, then you take the Bible in your hand and ask God to guide your hand to open to where Gods word can FIT EXACTLY TO YOUR PRAYER. This is something very common people in my culture and religious community do...it has proven to work..

ALSO God can speak to us in dreams. I know a of people, and people in my family often times have a bad dream, ususally this might be a warning from God to spacifially work on staying close to Him in that day, because satan wants to attack us....very recently my cousin had a bad dream that her pinky toe was hurting every step she took (this indicated that she may have to be careful in life as to not take the wrong path and suffer in eternity... that is what her dad told her) she really believe that her dad was right and was seeking God that she might understand the path He wants her to take...she wanted to be reasured that it WAS indeed a dream from God...so she prayed in her room w her Bible in hand, then opened it to this: "For God may speak in one way or another, yet man does not perceive it. In a DREAM, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds, Then he opens the ear of men and seals their instruction." Job 33:14-16.

Does this not answer your question dear emy? I pray In Jesus' name you are given wisdom through the Holy Spirit to see how God speaks and notice when he is speaking, directly to you. :) Blessings my dear sisters in Christ.

Being still isn’t something we do much of in our lives. That’s part of why it’s hard to do it with the Lord. I’m glad you realize that God can speak to us in numerous ways. I encourage you to always take what you think you have heard Him say back to the Bible. God will never speak contrary to what He says in His Word. Our relationship with God is “work”, just like it is with our friends. We must make the effort to cultivate that relationship. Keep working on your “quiet listening”! Thanks, Meg, for your commitment to do that!

You ask an excellent question. Being still before the Lord, or “quiet listening” is not something we are encouraged to do very often, but what a blessing it is when we cease speaking and doing for God and quietly listen for Him to speak to us. Being still isn’t easy – we are a busy people! We often want a quick, instant answer from God. But when we can quiet our hearts and wait on the Lord that He can direct our paths (Prov. 37:3-7).

Jesus gives us a great example of quiet listening in Luke 10:38-42. Martha focused on doing things for the Lord – getting the meal ready, getting the house clean. Mary chose to sit quietly at Jesus feet and listen to Him.

We speak to God through our prayers. God speaks to us through His Word, the Bible. During your prayer time, you can cultivate your skill at “quiet listening” by the Lord for direction and then going to the Word and reading until you find His answer. He will never speak to you contrary to what you read in Scripture. His Words will resonate with the Holy Spirit who is within you to help you recognize His voice as He is speaking to you (John 10:14).

I encourage you to use part of your prayer time to simply be in the Word to hear from God. I’m praying for you, Emy!

Wait.. sometimes while we're asking God for His will on something, He doesn't speak right away? Do we just sit and try to be "quiet" and wait for Him to say something? (Ps. I hope this doesn't sound spunky. I don't mean it to be.)

I have a weekly Bible study that I attend, and last week we SORT OF covered this area. God can also speak to us through a song. For instince, say that you had a christian song stuck in your head ALL day. It would get really annoying, but listen to the words. God might be saying something through the song.

    Just something else to consider..........

    Isaiah 41:13 (my favorite verse)

You don’t sound spunky at all, Heather! It is a very good question. Often times God doesn’t answer us right away – but we can rest assured that He hears our prayers. His answer may be “No”, “Yes”, or “Not yet”. So the waiting for His answer could take time. As we wait, it is important for us to stay in His Word and be seeking Him through prayer. He may speak to us directly through His Word, or through a friend, through our parents, through a song, through a sermon, or any other means that He chooses, but what He says will never contradict what is in His Word.

As you wait for His answer, just keep doing the next right thing that is in your path. As you spend time with Him and walk in obedience to His Word you can be confident that He will prove Himself faithful as He leads you on the path He has for your life. I’m praying for you, Heather SV, and asking God to clearly lead you in the days ahead!
