Our readers love to talk about God's truth. Several months ago, we offered the chance for LYWB.com readers to submit posts for our blog. The response was overwhelming. You'll be able to catch the writing of these one-time guest bloggers in the coming months. These are readers just like you who are striving to live out God's truth. Since these are guest bloggers, their style or approach may be a little different than you're used to, but we've read every word and we think they've got something important to say. In fact, check out this great post by Julia.

woman carrying heavy backpackPicture this:

You are about to start a race. You're standing at the starting line, adrenaline pumping, and heart racing with anticipation. You glance sideways at the man holding the gun. It sounds, and you're off! Starting at a quick jog, you're feeling great. Then your friend comes up and asks you to carry her backpack for her. You pick it up and keep running. Then a large, muscled man comes up and hands you a barbell. Ow! This thing weighs a ton! You tell yourself to ignore it. Keep running. Wait a minute. What's in this backpack anyway? It feels like it's full of bricks! Finally, a sailor comes and slings an anchor over your shoulder. Ouch! You're slowed to a walk, the pain almost too much to bear. You'll never finish the race now!

This race is actually displayed in Hebrews 12:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith (vv. 1–2).

So the "race" is actually your spiritual life. You want to run fast and finish strong, right? But you've slowed to a walk because of your weights.  The verse tells us that we should strip off those weights that slow us down or trip us up. Those could be TV, a bad friend, or anything that keeps you from growing closer to God.

It's easy to make excuses about our weights. Maybe you tell yourself "this show isn't really that bad. I mean, I don't swear, so it doesn't affect my life." Or that that friend who isn't a Christian "is only my friend so I can witness to her. We go to all those parties so I can get closer to her. Then I can tell her about Jesus!"

I'm not saying that watching TV is bad or that having a non-Christian friend is bad. I'm definitely not saying that witnessing to people is bad! Just think a minute. When do those things become weights? Are they slowing down your walk with Jesus?

So what are your weights? Ask Jesus, the "perfect champion who initiates and perfects our faith" to help you strip them off.

Meet the author: My name is Julia. I'm an eighth grader who loves playing the piano, reading, and hanging out with my friends! One of my favorite verses is in Psalm 121:1–2: "I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth."

Great post! I struggle with weights that hold me down all of the time. It is an ongoing struggle for me to try to overcome everyday. I am so very thankfull though, that my God is there to hold me up!

    Thanks so much, Julia.
It is great to be reminded of this lesson. This is something I am going to try to work on this week...Getting rid of weights.
Media is a big thing for me, I love to read books, watch movies, and listen to songs...And not all of them are edifying. I think they are big weights that keep me from God. Pray for me and all the other girls who have weights that need dealing with. I will definately pray for all of you!

Julia, you did a great job on this article. It's good (especially for me) to be reminded and remember that I can't get distracted when I'm running the race for the Lord. If something is hindering my relationship with God there needs to be a change to take the weight off.

Thank you, this was a blessing.

Great post Julia! Really liked it - it's so important what you said... I'm going to be thinking about it a lot - the weights interfering with my walk with Jesus. I guess there's lots in my life that needs changing...

    Thanks again,
    with love,

Thanks Julia for your post! It was very well written and has encouraged me to have a look at my own "race" and see what weights are weighing me down.
    May the Lord bless you!

I loved this post its so true, the things that hold us away can easily destroy us if we dont take it and lay it down at His feet then and only then can we be truly forgiven and feel the burden lifted...Great post today;)

Great post! :) I stripped off a weight-facebook!-last weekend. I'm fasting from it for the week, because it's really been consuming me. If I get back on and I'm still having problems, I'll probably fast again! It's very freeing to get rid of all those weights! Thanks again, Julia!

    Thank-you so much!!!
I really needed to hear this today! God has certainly given me a challenge during this season of my life, I'm recovering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and it's so hard at home and often don't get a lot of emotional support, which is even harder!

And thank-you for the reminder, I could use prayer, and I'm glad God led me back to this specific to run the race towards healing and over-coming PTSD and it's hard, I do so much better when I'm at school, I'm more emotionally worn out as well when I'm at home!

It's like God's using this season to bring me closer to HIM! I just fear sometimes going home because everything that is going on, and it's harder to read my Bible and trust in Jesus ever since I WAS FIVE years old and I'm not LEAVING!!!!

I have to go through a 230 page book and I'm on page 107, would you pray for more Christian fellowship and God will lead me in direction about where to go next?

God is calling me I truly believe to get a business management which is a huge leap of faith and then get an Executive Business Management degree where I live!

I'd like to read more of these type of stories and just God would totally restore the relationships between my folks through this season!

And thank-you for this reminder!!:) :)

Blessings on this wonderful ministry!!! I'm praying that God would totally restore me as if nothing even happened!!!

Praying for you sweet friend! I know that you have gone and are going through some difficult times. God can use these for your good and for His glory. Praying that the Lord will continue to draw you to Himself (a very good thing), that He will restore the joy in your life (Hab. 3:17-19) and that your home life will improve. Keep trusting God even though you can’t see His purpose or plan in your life, friend. He does have a plan to use the things you have gone through for your good and His glory!

There are many sites on the internet that will walk you through the process of starting your own blog, step by step. I encourage you to let your parents know what you want to do so they can help you walk through the process. That will also provide some accountability and direction as you venture into this new area.

    Praying for you, Sky!
